A multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) is a specialized scan that provides a more detailed image of the prostate gland compared to a standard MRI. Typically, doctors recommend an mpMRI when there is suspicion of prostate cancer.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe and noninvasive scanning method that utilizes a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and specialized software to generate detailed images of organs and tissues in the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI uses harmless magnetic radio waves. By programming MRI scans with various pulse sequences or parameters, specific differences between healthy and unhealthy tissue can be highlighted. When two or more parameters are employed, it is known as multiparametric MRI (mpMRI).
